SPIRITS

GIN is like vodka. It is a colorless distilled beverage made from a combination of alcohol, water and various flavours such as juniper berries, caraway seeds, coriander, cinnamon, almond, citrus peel, anise and angelica root. The flavors in this alcoholic beverage are all natural. Gin does not improve with age; therefore, it is not kept in wooden casks.

VODKA

Originally, vodka was made from the fermented wheat mash. Other ingredients used to make vodka are corn, potatoes and mash of rye or other substances like fruit or sugar.  Vodka is a well-liked alcoholic drink and is consumed neat or as cocktails such as Bloody Mary, Cosmopolitan and Martini.

RUM is the most preferred alcoholic beverage. It is made from cane juice, boiled juice scummings, molasses, treacle, or from the residues of previous distillations. The name rum is used sometimes as the generic name for intoxicating liquor. This alcoholic beverage is aged in barrels for a minimum of three years.

WHISKEY is a distilled beverage made from fermented grain mash such as potatoes, barley, rye, corn and wheat in the countries of Ireland, Scotland and the United States. Ireland and Scotland use malted barley to make whiskey but the United States uses maize, wheat or rye to make this alcoholic beverage.

Whiskey has a distinctive taste, which occurs after fermenting in burnt white oak wood. A good whiskey contains as much as 40% alcohol. When bottled in casks, the aging process of whiskey stops.

TEQUILA is an alcoholic beverage extracted from the fermented juice of the Agave Tequilana, a Central American century plant.

BRANDY  is made from fermented fruit juice. Although this alcoholic beverage is distilled from any fruit, for it to attain higher acidity it usually made from the fermentation of early grapes. LIQUEURS or FLAVORED SPIRITS

Liqueurs are prepared by brewing certain fruits, flowers, or wood in alcohol or water and adding sugar. However, others are made from aromatic or flavoring agents. The amount of alcohol in most liqueurs is 20-65 percent. Liqueurs are after dinner drinks, which generally consumed in small amounts.

WINES & CHAMPAGNE

Wines are alcoholic beverages made from fermented fleshy fruits such as grapes, apples, plums and peaches. Most wines are made from grapes but can be made also from specific parts of other plants.

Ripened grapes are harvested from farms (vineyards). Harvesting time is vital because grapes must be harvested when there is a balance of accumulated acids, sugar and grape flavors are achieved at the optimum level to produce the best wine. Too early or too late harvesting can result in an inferior wine quality.

Wines are stored in glass containers and sealed by placing a solid cork into the container’s neck. The bottles are placed on the sides during storing so the wine can mature. This position allows the cork to get moisture and keeps the seal airtight. While some wines take a year or two to mature after production, others require may more years to realize their best flavor.

RED WINE – distilled from the skins of dark-colored grapes and has a red color.

WHITE WINE – usual wine with a clear, transparent color, close to white, such as Sherry, Madeira, and Lisbon.  White wines are separate from deep red color wines, like port and Burgundy.

ROSE WINE – distilled from red grapes, this table wine’s pinkish color results from removing the skins of the grapes after the fermentation process starts.

PORT WINE- is a fortified wine with a sweet taste and traditionally is a product of Portugal. It is a dessert wine made chiefly by the following varieties of grapes: Tinta Cao, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Toriga Nacional and Toriga Francesa.

CHAMPAGNE – is a sparkling white wine distilled from a mixture of grapes, specifically Chardonnay and pinot.

VERMOUTH

Vermouth is an aromatized wine made from infused barks, roots, flowers, herbs, seeds and spices and then fortified by brandy.

Vermouth can be sweet or dry.  Used as an ingredient in mixed drinks, Vermouth is also a well-known ingredient in Martini.

COGNAC

Cognac is a type of brandy but deserves special mention because its production takes place only if specific requirements are in place.

The process of making this alcoholic beverage consists of using special Ugni Blanc grapes. BEER

Beer is produced by fermentation. Wort, which is a mixture of yeast and malted cereal, like barley, corn, rye or wheat is liquefied then used in the process. When fermented, this liquid mixture produces both alcohol and carbon dioxide. The fermentation process is stopped before completion to inhibit the alcoholic content. Beer contains 4-8 percent alcohol.

LARGER is beer originally made in Germany. This type of beer has a small number of hops and takes from 6 weeks to 6 months to age.
